Dedication

This project is dedicated to three men who got me started as a newspaper photographer. They left this life far too soon and are not here to be included in these photographs. But their influence on me is permanent and is a motivator for this work.

John Allee and I were photographers together at the Newark Advocate in the early 1970s. We remained close friends for life. John taught me pretty much everything important that I know about photography.

Bruce Humphrey was the photo editor at the Newark Advocate and hired me as a photography intern while I was still in high school in 1968. In recent years I would jokingly accuse him of ruining my life because after my experience at the Advocate I was on a path that had no options other than to be a photographer. I can't thank him enough for that.

Steve Pyle was the chief photographer when Bruce hired me as a photo intern at the Newark Advocate. I spent my first week of work driving Steve around to all his assignments because his car was in the shop. I couldn't have had a better introduction to what it meant to be a newspaper photographer. Steve went on to work for the Associated Press in Columbus and Chicago and sadly died many years ago because of a bad heart.
